President's Message
And We're Off... PDF Print E-mail

While those words (or something similar) are what we hear at the start of the Kentucky Derby and other horse races, it also describes the first couple of months here at the Chamber as well. If the Chamber Year was to be compared to a large oval racetrack then you would say we are about to enter turn one with three more turns (quarters) to go. And if I were the race announcer and giving the updates at each length of the track I would be very excited about our track position! I would be raising my voice and letting folks know that we are ahead of the pack and looking strong. I might even be so excited that I would say we have opened up a gap already as we head into turn one. Albeit that 2010 still has a long way to go and the race will have its bumps along the way, and we may have unexpected competition along the way; but so far so good! A lot of preparation, training, hard work, and experience goes into winning these annual races, and it is great to know that your Chamber is up to the challenge.

What Does the Chamber Do? PDF Print E-mail

The Chamber of Commerce is a catalyst...a common vehicle through which the enlightened mutual interests of all segments of the business community work together for the common good of the total community. A better community means better business and we are working for a better community for everyone here. That's why we do what we do. Which brings us back to that original question, what do we do?

There is, in the final analysis, one reason for the Chamber of Commerce to exist and that is to do whatever is necessary to keep this area's economic condition such that people will be willing to risk their resources here in the hope of making a profit. Everything else is either a means to an end, or just the frosting on the cake.

It's Not Rocket Science PDF Print E-mail

Like you, I often wonder if it is worth the time and trouble to make any New Years’ Resolutions. There are lots of things I would like to do but as the years slip by it is pretty obvious that I am going to run out of time before I run out of cool things to do. I’m not getting any younger and hiking the Appalachian Trail ain’t getting any easier either! I suppose I could try and lose a few pounds, run another 5K, eat healthier, (I probably won’t try another let-my-hair-grow-long stunt), vow to be more patient and nicer to those around me, and such things. Recently though, I have been thinking about maybe combining a few resolutions with a few of my B.H.A.G.’s (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) and see what happens. Who knows, maybe a few of them will get some traction and a year from now I may be able to look back and realize that things around me are a bit better for everyone. I would like to share a few of them with you and see what you think. Keep in mind, there is a big difference between a B.H.A.G. and a STTD (Simple Thing To Do).

Things Are Heating Up at the Chamber… PDF Print E-mail

While all of us will be pressing hard to get all of the items on our “To-do” list scratched off by the end of the year, we will definitely find time to stop and remember the reason for the season and we invite you to join us for food, fun, and fellowship. In fact, go ahead right now and make a note on your calendars to include the Chamber Office on your list of places to visit.
