I CDUOL NOT BLVEIEE IT! PDF Print E-mail

I recently read something that made me think about the incredible power of the human brain:

I cduol not blveiee taht I cluod    aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg! Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deos not mttaer  waht oredr the ltteers of a wrod are in,  the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the first and last ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can still raed it wouthit a porbelm. This is bcuseae of the pheonmneal pweor of the hmuan mind. It deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Amzanig huh?

Since I love to Google and also enjoy mindless trivia, I decided to look up some interesting facts about the brain. Enjoy!

The weight of the human brain is about three pounds.
Your skin weighs twice as much as your brain.
The brain is made up of about 75% water.
Your brain stops growing at age 18.
Your brain uses 20% of the total oxygen in your body.
Each time we blink, our brain kicks in and keeps things illuminated so the whole world doesn’t go dark (about 20,000 times a day)
Laughing at a joke is no simple task as it requires activity in five different areas of the brain
The average number of thoughts that humans are believed to experience each day is 70,000.
According to a study by Bristol-Myers Squibb, accountants have the highest incidence of on-the-job headaches, followed by librarians, then bus and truck drivers
Those who are left-handed or ambidextrous have a corpus collosum (the part of the brain that bridges the two halves) that is about 11% larger than those who are right-handed.
Some people (about 12%) dream only in black and white while others dream in color.

The Best Days to Slaughter Livestock PDF Print E-mail

I was flipping through the 2010 Farmer’s Almanac recently and landed on their astrological timetable (based on the moon’s sign) which shows the best days for certain activities during the month. Did you know these are the best day (s) in February to:

Begin a diet          1, 5
Begin logging          9, 10, 11
Breed animals          5, 6

2009 in Review PDF Print E-mail

I’ve always disliked opening those holiday letters in which someone is recapping their whole year. Frankly, if I wanted to know all that, I probably would have kept in touch with you throughout the year and would know all that stuff already!
But, as I sit here trying to figure out what to write about this month, it just seems appropriate to reminisce a little bit about the close of one year and the beginning of another.

Digital Count Down PDF Print E-mail

Ace Hardware has a little digital calendar sitting by the cash register that counts down the days until Christmas. This weekend, I was shocked to see that there were only 26 days left until Christmas and was constantly surprised at the number of people who remarked on this as they were checking out. I guess even though it’s the end of November and December is just around the corner, the fact that the Christmas season is now less than 30 days away is mindboggling.

Pound It During Flu Season! PDF Print E-mail

Flu season is upon us. I’m one of these people who have never had a flu shot and brag that I never get sick enough to visit the doctor. I like to say it’s because I practice preventative health maintenance, especially during allergy season. I always stock up on Echinachea tea (an herbal immune booster) and when I feel that first sniffle or scratchy throat, I drink lots of it with locally grown honey. I recently ran across some info in Natural Health magazine about the H1N1 virus and thought it was worth passing along. It’s always nice to have healthy, natural alternatives to help combat illness.
