Business Spotlight

Sherry Oliver, Agent

I’d like to invite you to join a special group of people. This group has already discovered the benefits of choosing Shelter Insurance® for their auto, home or life insurance needs. They’ve also learned what it means to have an agent like me working for them each and every day. Our customers consistently tell us they would recommend Shelter to a friend.

Why? The number one reason is because of their agent!

I would love the chance to show you how hard I’ll work for you!

Stop by my office or give me a call and I’ll work up a free quote with your specific situation in mind. I’ll help you determine which discounts you qualify for and how to get the right coverage at the right price.

Bring Rover Over

South Mt. Juliet City Park is now available for many activities! This satellite park has a pavilion, sand volleyball court, nature trail and Mt. Juliet’s very own "Bark Park." This 3/4 acre fenced-in area allows you and your dog space to play, providing recreation for all walks of life so everyone will be encouraged to bring their families and dogs to enjoy the parks system in our community. The park opens at dusk and closes at dawn. Please note that female dogs in heat, puppies under four months of age and pit bulls are not allowed in the City of Mt. Juliet Bark Park. For a full list of rules and regulations, go to http://www.cityofmtjuliet.org/.

Golf Classic

Mark your calendars now and make plans to join us at the Annual Golf Classic to be held on Thursday, September 17th at Pine Creek Golf Club. Plans are currently underway to expand this year’s tournament to include both a morning and an afternoon shotgun start. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, this year’s entry fee is likely to be reduced with early registration and an additional discount may be available for those wishing to double their chances of winning (or simply want to make a day of it!) and playing 36 holes! As always, this is one of the Premier Golf Tournaments in the area and participation and sponsor support is consistently rated among the best around.

If you are interested in playing, being a sponsor (we have something for everyone!), volunteering, or just need additional information, be sure to watch for details coming soon.
If you would like to serve on the Tournament Steering Committee, please call or email Mark at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and join us at our Tournament kick-off Meeting.

Chairman's Chat

Jason Loggins, ChairmanI recently had a conversation with fellow chamber member Tina Taylor at a chamber event about how we, as human beings, needed to not worry about every little mistake or problem that occurs in our hectic lives.

Basically, don’t sweat the small stuff.  The conversation was precipitated by yours truly apologizing for an earlier erroneous statement.  Yet, my friend did not take this opportunity to point out yet another faux pas committed by the male species…..instead; she conveyed positive energy and mentioned how life is too short to let every little thing get to us.  I thought, wow!  What a refreshing attitude.  We all say, “don’t worry, it will be all right”.  But, do we really believe what we are saying?  Does the person we’re speaking to believe it?

News from Ken Martin - The Art of Haggling

When I first thought about writing this article I found myself thinking about nagging. For some reason I kept wanting to say nagging instead of haggling. I guess it’s because haggling sounds a lot like nagging. I guess it could also be that when you haggle the haggled recipient sometimes feels they are being nagged. Anyway, and with all seriousness in mind, haggling can be very successful when it comes to saving money for you and your family.

Green Eggs and Ham

My youngest daughter, Lindsay, has a quote on her Facebook page by Dr. Seuss that says “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.”

I’m constantly surprised by people who try to be everything to everybody instead of simply being who they are. When I was in high school back in the 70’s, I was a bit of a hippie chick with hair down to my waist, parted straight down the middle. I would go to school in frayed jeans, no make-up and flip-flops. People would always tell me that I would be much prettier if I just put forth a little effort and I would simply roll my eyes and say “whatever…” and didn’t change one single thing.

Quotes For Success

My five favorite quotes and how they help me succeed in business.

  • You will learn more from failure than any success you enjoy.
  • If no one’s mad at you, then you’re probably not doing enough.
  • Become a student of life – never stop learning.
  • Work hard, play harder.
  • Just do it!

State FarmI share these thoughts with you today in hopes they help you as much as they’ve helped shaped my outlook on success and career. The first one taught me that it’s okay to
fail, so long as I learn from my mistakes. And, boy do I learn – I dissect and autopsy everything that doesn’t end in success – whether it’s a marketing strategy, a potential sale or some- If you’re making things happen, people are going to talk about it – good and bad! I have learned to enjoy the positives and assess the negatives – is there any merit? Can thinking about this make me better? If not – I throw it away and press on. Never stop learning – learn from anyone and everyone you come in contact with, learn from mistakes – yours and the mistakes of others and most importantly expect to learn something from everyone – every day. If we’re really open to learning – it’s amazing how much we can improve… what can a 2-year old teach me? How about my grandmother, my superior, my subordinate and my peer? What can your dog teach you? There are lessons all
around us – listen for them! thing in my personal life. So, when the first 3 businesses I was involved in didn’t succeed, I didn’t get down… I got  back on the horse. I learned from the mistakes I made and today I am enjoying the fruits of those labors with a business that is winning. Each start-up business I was involved in taught me a little more that has helped me achieve more success in the next venture. The second thought has gotten me through the past 2 and half years. We can never please everyone all the time. There will be people who don’t like what you’re doing or how you do it – don’t worry about that. If what you’re doing is right, there will be folks sitting in judgment. The fact that they are talking about it tells you that you’re doing something!

If I work hard, so I can justify play time! Enjoy your life. Find and keep the balance between work and play. Never let one become more important than the other – it’s the balance that allows you to achieve success. The biggest mistake I’ve ever made was to stop exercising. Creativity diminished, tolerance was reduced and the ability to dissect and solve a problem was lost. When I balance my health (mind, body and spirit) with my career – I’m happier and I accomplish more. And, when all else fails – Just do it! Don’t wait for someone else to do what needs to be done – just do it! Don’t wait to see what tomorrow brings – just do it! Don’t wait to see if others approve – just do it! I have learned that it’s always better to ask for forgiveness than to wait for permission – our superiors are busy…what’s hot on your plate is not even on their radar. So… sweep the floor, clean the bathroom,
buy a ream of paper, make the coffee and when you are called to lead – just do it!

In today’s business the big question is “what can you do for me?” Solve the problem, be the answer! I wish for you a path that’s challenging, because I’ve learned that the easy path bears no reward. Work hard, play hard and just do it!

Virtual Tour Map of Wilson County

When Warren Buffet recently admonished investors to steer away from print newspapers, he was affirming what had already become obvious to most of us – that the internet has created a change in the way people get their news and how they search for goods and services. The real estate industry was the first to recognize that the internet would revolutionize marketing efforts. Today, the inclusion of digital photography and virtual tour imagery are an enhancement for any real estate listing. Search filters on major real estate sites like www.realtor.com encourage users to sort listings so that those with virtual tours and plenty of photographs are listed first in the search results. The term “new media” has been used to describe the video, music, virtual tour imagery, photography and animation being employed by savvy web marketers to retain consumer interest in their websites.

In today’s fast changing electronic world, websites that do not contain some “new media” content run the risk of being overlooked or ignored by potential new customers with
“expectations.” The Mt. Juliet Chamber has responded to these “expectations” by creating an interactive new media choice for people seeking information about goods, services and points of interest in Wilson County. The Ipix Virtual Tour Map of Wilson County recently launched from www.mtjulietchamber.com offers participants in affordable enhancement
alternative to a traditional directory style listing. Delivered in a template that features up to 20 Ipix scenes, sponsor contact information, links to website, directions, and ad copy to
accompany each image, the tour is a prime photography asset that business owners will use permanently to embellish their own websites.

More value is added when, at no additional charge, the virtual tour is displayed www.mtjulietchamber.com and www.visitwilsoncounty.com for a year. It is also useful for businesses such as hotels, restaurants, golf courses and shopping centers to post a link to the entire map on their websites so out-of-town visitors can use it as a resource for trip planning.
The virtual tour map functions as a quick loading visual of the highlights of Wilson County with easy access to contact information, directions, and website links. Participation is very
affordable and provides the opportunity to instantly update your own website with interactive content while “piggybacking” on the traffic enjoyed by the websites of the Chamber and CVB.

To take advantage of this exciting and affordable new marketing tool, please call Mark Hinesley at 758-3478.
